Kota Kapur Archaeological Site

Situs Kota Kapur is an archaeological site of a land fortress in which the Kota kapur inscription, dated 608 saka (686 AD, was found. The inscription stone is an oath in the form of phallus, in anchient Malayan language, and written in Pallawa characters, which showed that the area is the part of the Sriwijaya Kingdom.

The inscription stone was found by J.K. van der Meulen, a Dutch, in December 1892. H. Kern, an epigraph worked for Bataviaasch Genootschaap in Batavia, analyzed it for the first time. Bataviaasch Genootschap

The replica of the inscription can be found in Indonesia Tin Museum in pangkalpinang. This Archaeological site is located in Desa Kota Kapur, Mendo Barat District, Bangka Regency. Besides the fortress and the inscription, a temple was also found.
